Old Bay is getting an upgrade—by going nostalgic.

On December 1st, the Chesapeake Bay seasoning announced it's ditching its current plastic packaging and bringing back its original tin boxes. Don't worry: Everything else will remain the same, including the iconic logo, design, and signature blend inside.

"Old Bay is more than a seasoning. It's a symbol of heritage, flavor, and Baltimore pride," Giovanna DiLegge, the vice president of marketing at McCormick & Company (Old Bay's parent company), said in a statement. "The return to tin is our way of honoring generations of fans who've made Old Bay a staple for decades. From crab feasts with family and friends to much more, Old Bay has long been the flavor that brings people together."

The new (old?) tins are set to hit shelves this month. To celebrate, the company is offering fans a chance to win a limited-edition prize pack in a collectible tin created in collaboration with the Baltimore Ravens. Those hoping to try their luck can enter from now through December 14, 2025, at mccormick.com.

    Old Bay tin returns

While the switch may seem small, it could be significant to consumers concerned about microplastic exposure and their overall plastic footprint. Plastic pollution (especially from single-use containers) is one of the biggest contributors to the global waste epidemic. Meanwhile metals (e.g. aluminum and tin) are often easier to recycle than plastic counterparts. That may just be the best news about Old Bay's new packaging.

C.L. Smith, a packaging solutions company, explains that "when recycled correctly, tin cans have a low environmental footprint." Though tin mining and manufacturing require energy, properly recycled tins are "a far better option than plastic in terms of sustainability."

Old Bay started selling its seasoning in plastic containers in 2017. Now, shelves will once again be stocked with the iconic metal tins.
